An Important Message for Anyone That Shopped in a Target Store Recently What Happened?
Target has confirmed it is aware of unauthorized access to payment card data belonging to Target guests who made credit card and debit card purchases in its U.S. stores between November 27, 2013 and December 15, 2013.
It does not appear that this event affected guests who made purchases online at target.com. Click HERE to read the Target press release.
What is the Potential Danger?
The data stolen could be used to create counterfeit cards by applying the stolen data to the magnetic strip of a blank payment card.
How to Respond:
Check your bank/credit card statements for unauthorized activity.
If unauthorized use of your debit or credit card number is found:
– contact the financial institution that issued the card to you
– dispute the unauthorized charges
– complete any paperwork required by financial institution (usually a 1 or 2 page affidavit)
– the financial institution should cancel the card in question and issue a new card to you
Another response option:
– call the financial institution that issued the payment card you used at Target in the referenced time period
– cancel the card
– ask your financial institution to issue a new card to you
